ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR

Robert Boyd is an alumni and longtime member of Playhouse West-Philadelphia, and student of Tony Savant.  Robert first studied filmmaking at the Art Institute of Philadelphia.  Under Mr. Savant's tutelage, Robert honed the disciplines of acting, writing, directing and producing.

 

Robert is an award-winning writer, director and producer, and for years has mentored filmmakers in the Philadelphia area.  His films have received accolades such as a Semi-Finalist in the Rhode Island Flickers Film Festival, Semi-Finalist in the American Black Film Festival, Audience Choice Award (Mom), Winner for Best Actress (Sania, A Modelled Life), Best Actor (American Dream), and Best Director (Sania) in the Playhouse West-Philadlephia Film Festival.

CLASS DESCRIPTION

IT'S TIME TO BE PROACTIVE.  Take your career into your own hands and learn the technical aspects of filmmaking. If you are ready to learn to make your own film or gain knowledge of how the filmmaking process works, this course is for you!

Taught by award-winning filmmaker, Robert Boyd, and supervised by Tony Savant, Director of Playhouse West-Philadelphia Director.  

 

Film Lab 1 will be very detailed and hands on, covering the fundamental technical aspects of filmmaking.

Students will get practical, hands on training and learn how to use the equipment. This course will be the first level of three FILM LAB courses offered, and will available to Playhouse West members and non-members.

This class is also a pre-requisite to get into Film Lab 2, and for anyone who wishes to rent out equipment.

THE COURSE COVERS

  • Camera: anatomy of a camera, exposure triangle, composition & angles, coverage, lenses, the 180 degree line rule, the tripod, color, etc.

  • Sound: how sound works, how to get the best results, recording sound, sound mixers, mics, booms, lavaliers, etc.

  • Grip & Electric: learning all equipment from C-Stands to sandbags.

  • Lighting: how light works, color temperature, motivated lighting, 3 point lighting, different kinds of lights and lighting equipment, and more.

  • What you need to do next after the course is over.

Fridays, 10 a.m. - 1 p.m.

Saturdays, 10 a.m. - 1 p.m.

DURATION

September 22 for Friday class

September 23 for Saturday class

FILM LAB 1 lasts 6 consecutive weeks.

Class meets once per week.

COST

$125 for current Playhouse West Members

$230 for General Public (not current PW member)
